With the right load securing, all loads can be transported safely in the trailer - whether green cuttings, firewood, bulk material or mini excavators. The transport securing on your trailer should always be carried out with great care, otherwise it can be dangerous for you and other road users in traffic. In this article we explain how to secure your load optimally and what accessories are available for securing loads in car trailers.

What do I have to pay attention to when securing the load in the trailer?

In order to prevent the load from slipping, tipping over, rolling or falling down under normal traffic conditions, it must be properly secured. To properly secure your car trailer load, follow these 6 general rules:

  1. The centre of gravity of the load should be on the longitudinal centre line of the trailer.
  2. When loading the goods to be transported, the following applies: Heavy goods downwards, light goods upwards.
  3. The permissible total weight or axle loads must not be exceeded.
  4. The load should be secured against longitudinal and transverse movement.
  5. To prevent individual objects from falling onto others, the load must be transported without gaps (form-fitting).
  6. As a rule, the load may protrude up to 1.50 m to the rear - even up to 1 m without the need for a marking. If the load protrudes more than 40 cm to the side, it may also have to be marked.

You can read the exact regulations on load securing for trailers and the fines incurred in the event of inadequate transport securing here.

What types of load securing are there in the trailer?

  • Form-fit load securing: With this type of load securing, the load is loaded without gaps or flush with the other goods being transported and the side walls of the car trailer.
  • Force-fit load securing: This means lashing down the load with aids such as tension belts or ropes. These effectively counteract a change in position in bends (sliding sideways) or when braking (sliding forwards).

Lashing system for securing loads in the trailer

How can the load be optimally secured against slipping? As already mentioned, an effective measure for securing the load in the trailer is to lash it down. Our trailers* are therefore equipped with an integrated and easily adjustable lashing system. The three-way tippers type UDK Spinlock also all have the innovative and patented UNSINN load securing system Spinlock installed as standard.

* Exceptions are some WEB models

With the patented Spinlock load securing system from UNSINN, all types of goods can be transported particularly easily and flexibly. The 360° rotatable Spinlock system combines quality, efficiency and safety with lashing pins that are installed flat in the bridge floor.

The lashing pins can be loaded with up to 1,500 daN (kg) each, both on and under the loading area, e.g. with a strap loop. Up to nine lashing pins are installed on each long side, making the tipper optimally equipped even for heavy loads such as construction machinery, pallets and co. Lashing straps for load securing

In order to lash down the load, tension belts are used as an aid in force-fit load securing. Here are 3 tips to keep in mind when it comes to lashing straps:

  1. Adjust the tensile strength of the straps to the weight of the load. You will find the exact information on the identification plate of the strap.
  2. Always check the condition of the lashing straps before driving off. As soon as they are worn, torn or worn through, they must be replaced.
  3. On longer journeys, the lashing straps should be checked regularly for fit and tension and retightened if necessary.

Supplementary load securing equipment in the trailer

In addition to the lashing straps, there are a large number of other accessories for load securing in the car trailer. We offer an extensive range of load securing equipment for many purposes:

Flat tarpaulins and tarpaulin body

Flat tarpaulins are suitable for bulk goods such as sand or grain to prevent the load from blowing away and to make the load weatherproof. If higher goods are often loaded, it is worth buying a tarpaulin body to ensure that the load is also slip-proof in the upper area. Depending on the trailer, we offer tarpaulins and racks with different loading heights and tarpaulin colours.

Grid attachment and dropside attachment

For the transport of large loads, we recommend a side wall or grid attachment, which can be mounted on our three-way tippers, for example. This provides additional loading volume and ensures that none of the load is lost during the journey. The grid attachment is ideal for transporting firewood, for example.

Trailer net

Another aid is the trailer net, which is particularly suitable for bulky goods such as shovels, hooks or branches and prevents parts of the load from falling off the trailer. We offer, for example, the fine-meshed UNSINN fabric net with matching net and tarpaulin bar.

Further load securing equipment for your trailer:

Depending on the trailer, there are further load securing devices such as an aluminium cover with gas spring support, a rear drop side for long loads and much more. You can find out more about our trailer accessories on the product pages of the respective models and in our tipper brochure.
